  Thallus orbicular or irregularly spreading, 2–5 (–10) cm wide. Lobes linear-elongate to subirregular, ±imbricate, 1–3 (–5) cm long, 3–8 (–12) mm wide, often becoming concave; margins undulate and ±ascending or occasionally ±down-rolled at the apices, slightly thickened below, entire or irregularly incised, often phyllidiate or becoming densely lobulate-frilled. Upper surface glabrous, dark grey-blue to olive-green or dark brownish tan, with or without a reddish tint when wet, pale grey-blue or yellowish olive-brown to somewhat reddish brown when dry, matt to glossy, shallowly dimpled, wrinkled or undulate, white-pruinose and appearing frosted at the margins (×10 lens), rarely sparsely tomentose at the apices and this extending onto upper surface. Lower surface white throughout or darkening slightly to pale buff centrally. Veins narrow, slightly raised, 0.2–0.5 (–0.8) mm wide, pale buff to dark brown at the margins, brown-black or black centrally, finely tomentose, confluent to ±continuous at the margins, with oval to lenticular pale or whitish interstices. Rhizines simple to fasciculate or penicillate, white to pale buff or becoming dark brown, rather short, 1–3 (–5) mm long. Apothecia plane or slightly convex, horizontal, 2–3 (–5) mm diam.; disc distinctly raised above the thalline margin and usually convex, red-brown to brown-black, epruinose; margin pale buff, corrugate to minutely lobulate; exciple scabrid-tomentose below. Ascospores elongate-fusiform, straight or slightly curved, mostly 3-septate, less commonly 5–7-septate, (30–) 45–60 (–65) × 2.5–3.0 (–3.5) µm, colourless to pale olive.
CHEMISTRY: No substances detected by TLC.
     
  Common in N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.; grows on and among mosses or grasses, less commonly directly on soil, roadside embankments, over moist rocks in creek beds, on Eucalyptus trunks in alpine heath, at the margins of Eucalyptus forest and rainforest, or on rotting logs in disturbed forest, at altitudes to 1500 m. Also in New Zealand.
